The Su-9’s fuselage and vertical tail are very similar to the previous Su-7, but unlike the Su-7, the conventional swept wing is used. The “fishing cage” uses a delta wing with a sweep angle of 53.

The Su-9’s air intake cone is equipped with a simple “Ra” interception radar system to guide the four radar-guided K-5 (AA-1 “alkali”) air-to-air missiles under the wing However, like all radar beam-guided air-to-air missiles at the time, the K-5 was difficult to play in air combat. Unlike the Su-7 and later Su-15, the Su-9 is not equipped with a cannon, and the two pylons under the fuselage are used to carry the auxiliary fuel tank.
